Celebrating the Grape

Oct 23, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

It’s that time of year…the Niagara Wine Festival is on. Running through September 30, the region is focusing on the wineries and vineyards, tastings and events, all with a local flair. The odds are good that you will come home with a bottle or several based on new discoveries. For those who are passionate about their wine, stowing it on a shelf somewhere is not appropriate. And kitchen trends over the past couple years have seen a sharp decline in wine fridges. So where should your new vintages be stored prior to consumption? The wine cellar, naturally.

Recycled Shipping Containers as Buildings?

Sep 20, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

Have you ever driven by a stockyard and wondered what becomes of all those stacked shipping containers when they are deemed no longer useful for transport? Increasingly, many are being transformed into usable spaces, both commercially and residentially.

Inflatable Structures Help Solve Space Dilemmas

Sep 20, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

Do you think air pumps are just for tires and balloons? I think AirClad would strongly disagree. For years, the UK-based company has been producing temporary structures for both commercial and residential use that inflate when needed (usually for three days to three weeks) and deflate and neatly store away until they are needed again. Made of fabric, the structures are designed to compress with a ratio of 100m2 of usable space to 1 cubic metre when stored.

Design for the Greater Good – Mattel Children’s Hospital

Sep 20, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

Though some see design as a waste of time, the truth of the matter is that design has the power to change lives. It can brighten a sunken mood. It can envelope and bring a sense of safety. It can also unite; bringing people together to focus on a worthwhile task or cause.

Colour + Colour + Neutral

Sep 20, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

"For me, colour-plus-colour-plus-colour isn’t as good an equation as colour-plus-colour-plus-neutral. Adding a neutral keeps colours from looking childish and amateurish, and colours look richer when they’re paired with neutrals." -Betsy Burnham (House Beautiful, June 2012)

The Design of Yoga

Sep 20, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

September is National Yoga Month. While a yoga practice should not focus on the look of the studio, a space can certainly impact one’s practice just as much as the combined presence of those practicing within the space. As an avid practitioner and teacher, I have compiled images of studios in which I would love to practice.

Sep 20, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

Small space living is certainly not a new discussion point on Design Bites, but Milano Smart Living (MSL) is a company that is new to me. MSL “offers a prestigious and diverse array of specialized furniture for small apartments, impressive and beautiful in each of their functions,” all of which are 100% crafted in Italy.

Living Within your Volume Requirements

Sep 20, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

It is hard for me to believe that two (2) people live in this awesome looking, but ultra tiny, home. At only 25 m2 (or 269 ft2), that means a living space about the size of the average office cubicle for each inhabitant. Yet the owners find they have more than enough space for themselves and overnight guests.

Wall-Mounted Closet Valets

Sep 20, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

Often times, a “valet” for a closet is a bar that either slides out or extends downwards; not quite the same thing as a real valet system. So if you want more than just a bar, but do not want to take up valuable floor space, what are your options?

Back to School Bookshelves that also Divide Spaces

Sep 19, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

With the start of a new school season comes new books, both wanted and unwanted. For those in university or college, you might also be short on space and/or sharing tight quarters. I know my dorm room in first year was a decent size for two (2) people and we had adequate space. But I also know that that same room is now used for four (4) students! Here are some shelving / division solutions for small spaces.

Stairway to Heaven

Aug 30, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

I was speaking with a client earlier in the day who is getting closer to downsizing and eliminating stairs in her home. And then I saw the spiral staircase / light combination collaboratively designed by .PSLAB and architect Bernard Khoury, which got me to thinking about how much I love stairs.

Please Have a Seat!

Aug 30, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

Almost every space, whether personal, commercial, or institutional, requires some sort of seating. I love using stools and benches for their versatility, particularly in smaller spaces. If you’re in need of some new seating, how about considering something a little out of the ordinary?

Bring the Outdoors In – The New Rustic

Aug 30, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

I was speaking with someone in his early 20s a few weeks back who was lamenting the glut of what he considered "modern" design and the seeming disappearance of "rustic" style. He referenced a couple of Canadian interiors magazines as his evidence. The magazines, in fairness, tend to focus on more transitional and contemporary designs due to their readership demographics.

A True Investment Chair

Aug 30, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

In case you have not yet noticed the trend in my preferences, two of the things I love in design are simplicity and pops of red. The Anti Crise Chair by Pedro Gomes embraces both. But I also love the thought process that went into the chair and what Gomes calls "emotion driven design".
