Making Room for Shoes

I have a girlfriend who has an entire closet devoted to her fabulous shoe collection. But most of us are not so fortunate. In fact, most have very little space at all.

That said, there is never an excuse for a heaping pile. There are different options (and price points) available depending on your needs and space that are worth exploring.

If your preference is to keep your shoes within your closet and you have some spare floor space, consider something like the Shoe Swirl (at left). Inspired by the “lazy Susan,” the Shoe Swirl sits on a rotating base and features eighteen (18) compartments to hold up to thirty (30) pairs of shoes. Simply pull it forward to activate the rotation.

If you’d rather not have anything directly on the floor, enter the wall rack option (top two images in the below grouping). There are certainly other options among this category, including the typical white wire-framed models you can find just about anywhere, but these two are much nicer to look at.

J-Me also offers shoe racks which are meant to be seen, such as the Freestanding and Wall-Mounted versions (above). If you need to keep your shoes out in the open, make sure they look good!

If there is no possible way you can store all of your footwear within your closet(s), take a look at everyone’s favourite “box” store — Ikea. Both the Hemnes and Ställ cabinets (shown below) are sturdy furniture-like pieces with narrow depths that utilize vertical space. They discreetly hold a minimum of eight (8) and eighteen (18) pairs of shoes, respectively, while also creating a space for display on the top surface. (I’ve installed similar cabinets in spaces for clients and many did not realize they were meant for shoes until they were told that was their purpose.)

As an added bonus, should you have more space than you have shoes, you can certainly use these cabinets to store other items with ease: books, toys, etc.
