The Chair Statement

For some, a chair is nothing more than a place to sit. With any luck, it will be at least somewhat comfortable and look decent within the space. But for others, a chair is a statement piece. It can show creativity and uniqueness and allow for untold amounts of experimentation.

To that end, here are some new designs that push the barriers of what a “chair” should be, introducing a sense of whimsy and playfulness.

The FF1 is in indoor lounge chair designed by Belgians, James van Vossel and Tom de Vrieze, of Fox & Freeze.

Manufactured from one square sheet of synthetic felt, the chair is self-supporting — there is no wood, metal, or any other material used in its structure. The only “loss” of material comes from the drilled holes into which flax rope is inserted.

The shell and base of the chair remain connected as one sheet of felt; the form is created by strategically twisting the material.

In a similar vein, Danish Designschool graduate Nina Bruun was inspired by origami when she designed the Fold chair.

Like the FF1, the Fold chair is comprised primarily of felt. However, the fold also features a plywood frame and hinges, as well as a plastic shell. The seams, which were hand sewn, “are visible to create a more industrially expression and to create sharp edges which gives the chair a lighter expression,” say Bruun.

As the name suggests, the Fold chair (shown below, in orange) need not be taken apart to move from place to place; it folds and can be easily carried.

A second chair by Nina Bruun, the Nest Chair (shown above), was inspired by Spring. The Nest is composed of varying thicknesses of birch strips, which effectively hide the structure’s bottom and four stabilizing legs. The seat cushion was intentionally kept nondescript in chocolate brown, which plays nicely against the birch.

In some cases where it is not possible to enlarge the footprint of the kitchen, not much can be directly done about the counter space. There are, however, options that make the sink a more functional component that helps extend the available workspace.

Vessel Sink Faucets for Non-Modern Spaces

May 17, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

Though I love cleaner, more contemporary lines, many of my clients prefer something more transitional or traditional. In the past, I’ve had difficulty finding non-contemporary faucets for vessel sinks, both in single and 8″ centre spread options, at reasonable price points. This year’s K|BIS provided multiple options.

Universal Design Calls for Functional Illumination

May 17, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

Universal Design (UD) is definitely something I’ve explored before on multiple occasions. Despite that, I think its important to begin by noting that UD is not just about accessibility and using ADA-approved products. Rather UD is about creating environments that can be used by as many people as possible.

The Elevance rising wall tub is a fabulous alternative to the plethora of walk-in tubs currently on the market. Rather than walking in, sitting down, and waiting for an exceedingly deep tub to fill, the Elevance fills within 3-5 minutes and invites you to sit with ease at chair height.

The U-Socket Outlet

May 17, 2012 by MeCC Interiors

I love the idea of the U-Socket, which incorporates two (2) USB outlets into a standard AC receptacle! While you might not immediately think “interiors” when you see this product, think of the clutter it could help eliminate in offices, computer zones, and docking/charging zones throughout the home.
