Eco-Living & Design Tips

Light up your life

This year, change all your lighting to CFLs (compact fluorescent lighting). They are more efficient than standard incandescent. They use less energy, are more durable and emit less heat. CFLs are more expensive but keep in mind they last 8 times longer.

Give a second chance

Instead of buying new items every season to freshen up the look of your home, try working with what you already have. Modifying home accessories can be easy. Cover old lamp shades with 100% recycled polyester fabric or organic cotton and paint a new coat of low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint on the base. Remember, the key is to give every item a second life. If you can’t, don’t buy it! Look to the future.

Buy things for longevity, not convenience.

Things that last and are reusable are sometimes extra work but better for the environment. They may need to be maintained, properly cleaned and stored. Such items may include napkins, dishes, place mats, table cloths, or grocery bags. Disposable items are convenient, you just throw them away. But consider the impact. Save containers from butter, large yogurts or takeout food. These are great for bringing lunches in rather than plastic or paper bags. Invest in recycled content grocery bags from your local grocery store. They are long wearing, more durable and usually can hold more than a standard plastic grocery bag…without breaking! Just fold them up and store in the trunk of your car so you always have them. Apply this same thought when considering larger items for your home decor. Make a new year’s resolution!

Try to make small, easy changes within your home that could help out the environment. Start a compost, unplug any electronics that aren’t in use and take a shower instead of bath.

5 ways to freshen up any space… environmentally friendly, of course!

  • Give your walls a fresh coat of low VOC paint. Beautiful colours don’t have to contain harmful toxins!
  • Dress your windows! Add some drapes or roman blinds made from 100% recycled polyesters or organic materials.
  • Be sure to add the latest designer rugs made of 100% recycled materials and from manufacturers who practice sustainable processes. Better for you, better for the earth.
  • Get toss cushions with down or feather inserts. They last longer and don’t contain fire retardants like foam inserts. Be sure they have a hidden zipper so the inserts can be taken out and put into a new cover. This will save on buying new inserts each time. Toss cushions are a great way to introduce colour and pattern in your space.
  • Invest in artwork! Add life to a space by hanging some colourful pieces. Check out what local artists have to offer.
