How to Stay Warm in Your Walk in Bathtub

There are a great many people who could benefit from the use of a walk in bathtub. Seniors, people with mobility issues and even baby boomers looking to ensure that they age in place can all benefit from having a door on their bathtub.

One of the "drawbacks" to such a bathtub is the fact that the user cannot fill the tub until the door is closed and cannot exit until the water has drained. The fact that the user may get chilled during these times appears to be a great deterrent to purchasing a walk in tub.

There are a few very simple solutions:

  1. Look for a bathtub with a low water volume. Many of the walk in bathtubs on the market are quite large, and while they look beautiful and very inviting, they do take more water and consequently have a longer fill and drain time. There are a few smaller walk in bathtubs on the market, requiring only as much water as a regular bathtub and still accommodating people up to 300 pounds or over 6 feet in height. As an added advantage these smaller bathtubs are also less costly to operate as the amount of hot water needed is considerably less.

  2. Install a heat lamp over the bathtub. New heat lamp technology has enabled a number of manufacturers to incorporate infra-red heating technology into modern light bulbs, replacing the over-sized versions of the past. These new heat lamps have a long life, provide instantaneous heating, are splash proof and are guaranteed to heat up your room — and you — when you step from the tub or shower. Speak with an electrician before installing a heat lamp to ensure safe installation

  3. Wrap Yourself in Warm Towels. Consider purchasing new, plush towels to wrap yourself in warmth and comfort when you are finished bathing. You can also heat those towels before you use them. Heated towel bars are a great addition to any bath. They are affordable and can add beauty as well. They come in a host of finishes and can be wall mounted, floor mounted, plugged in or hard wired. Once you have one you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Consider your safety, the need for the cleanliness, and relaxation that a bath provides as the most important issues and don't let "I'll be cold" serve as an excuse that prevents you or someone you love from having the safe bath.
