ENERGY STAR - It's all about reducing emissions

ENERGY STAR is the internationally recognized symbol that easily associates a product with energy efficiency. Only products that meet the ENERGY STAR criteria can be labeled ENERGY STAR. Not only can ENERGY STAR save consumers money on their energy bills, it helps save the environment. By choosing ENERGY STAR products, consumers help reduce Green House Gas emissions.

ENERGY STAR is promoted in Canada through NRCan's Office of Energy Efficiency. NRCan administers the ENERGY STAR program and sets guidelines for performance and requirements. Many products bear the ENERGY STAR symbol. Although there may be variances between requirements from one category of products to another, ENERGY STAR qualified products must be generally between 10 and 50 percent more energy efficient than their conventional counterparts.

Based on regional heating degree days, NRCan has divided the country into 4 Zones. NRCan also sets criteria for these Zones for window and door energy performance.

Zone A represents the mildest climates and Zone D represents the coldest climates. The criteria is progressively more stringent as the Zone increases. A product qualified for Zone D will have a better energy rating than one qualified for only Zone A.

leaf What value is there in purchasing an ENERGY STAR window?

All ENERGY STAR qualified products have undergone 3rd party certification to ensure validity of test results. Both their air leakage performance and energy ratings have been certified by an accredited agency.

ENERGY STAR qualified products have high performance glazings and a lower air-infiltration rate than their standard counterparts thus increasing comfort while lowering utility bills and reducing Green House Gas emissions.

Many home renovation government grant programs require ENERGY STAR qualified product be installed.
