100 Plus days to the New Year

Since fall is upon us, and school is about to commence I thought it fitting to address an agenda for those thinking about enduring a renovation in the New Year.

I often write about most commonly asked questions and concerns from clients. Our phone is already ringing. Those "planners" who are feeling out some thoughts on a "space face lift", in the new year. So it struck me to remind those who are thinking, yet not acting on exactly what it takes to not only plan, but begin, hire, select and contemplate the hundreds of decisions that soon will be upon you. I devised a short list/timeline below, an agenda so to speak of the what/when/where/who's; to ask as you embark on a renovation.

  • Start thinking, tear photos from magazines, research on line, and get an idea of the direction in which you prefer to go.

  • Call appropriate professionals. Those who are good are busy, and typically book 3-4 months in advance.

  • Interview designers. Check out websites, call around and get a feel for how they work/bill and manage a project. (Not all will work in the same capacity, for example; some consult and do not implement. And some do not consult absent of the project in its entirety.)

  • Devise a "rough scope of work" – To state kitchen/family room is a little broad

  • What do you want, wall tear down? Pot lights? Electrical? Cabinetry? New flooring? Painting? New sliding doors? An addition? Etc...

  • Define a budget likely the most important step I'll mention again, that a budget is not what you would like to "spend". It's what is true market value and what you are willing to invest. Keep in mind, if you hire well, a budget is a professional's best guide to keep you in check.

  • Look around, window shop. Know and understand various differences i.e. prefab or case goods vs. custom.

  • Once you feel you have a handle on what you want, get a consultation to ensure: a) You are on the right path b) These are the best decisions.

Keep in mind we do this all day everyday. I am certain you will gain some valuable insight and pointers to aid you in your quest.

Once these things are addressed, you're ready to confirm your crew, start your buying. And get ready to embark on the bumpy road of Reno's ahead. Don't worry it is "Always" worth it once it's finished. I promise!!! ☺

Happy Planning!!

When it comes to renovating the home, most homeowners have difficulty describing the style that they want.
