Lift your spirits, Enjoy your space, Love "your" home!

It's been said that "a man's home is his castle". While that phrase may seem dated now, the message is more relevant than ever. Let's consider a modern day translation: "our homes are our sanctuaries".

While the word 'sanctuary' is often associated with religious or spiritual meanings, it also means 'a place of safety'. Let's relate that definition to our homes. Ideally, walking in your front door should fill you with a sense of peace and happiness, whether your home is 700 square feet or 7000. Your home should feel like your refuge from the outside world, a place to exhale and relax, be that in your own company, with a partner, or in the middle of a busy family.

Need a little help to make your home feel that way? Start by thinking about what makes you feel good. Is it a tranquil spa-like ambience, or do you relax best when pursuing a passion such as cooking? Perhaps identifying one area or room in your home as your potential oasis is a good way to begin.

Here are some simple suggestions to help you get started:

  • Clean your windows. Something that simple can help lift our spirits and freshen our perspective

  • Add some fresh flowers. White flowers are easy to find, coordinate harmoniously with most décor, and can feel like a breath of fresh air

  • Try rearranging your furniture – a change really can be as good as a rest!

  • Introduce a splash of colour with some new accent cushions and/or a throw for your sofa

  • Consider rotating or replacing some of your decorative accessories. If you've always had the same vase on the mantle, pack it away for a while and replace it with some dramatic candles. Or, swap that tired artwork with some fun photos in colourful frames. Sometimes even new lamp shades are enough to inspire you.

Making your home a haven is definitely worth the effort – consider it an investment in your emotional health and well being. The concept of feng shui dictates that the placement of objects in your home can have an effect on health, wealth and personal relationships. And there are many studies demonstrating the power and impact of colour on mood .

A professional can help when you feel that a bigger effort is needed. While you are ultimately the best judge of how you feel in your home, we can help to clarify your vision, and create the best plan to achieve it.

Subtle changes in lighting and colour can work wonders. Many clients tell me that they're not sure what they need or want, but after seeing some options and samples, they zero in on what they like and we're on our way.

Sir Winston Churchill said that "We shape our buildings and thereafter they shape us." While harmonious décor may not guarantee that every day will run smoothly, it can certainly help you to feel good as you leave your home, and welcome you back after a long day.
