2010 Colour of the Year

"Escape to a tropical paradise, even if only a fantasy, with Pantone 15-5519 Turquoise." That is how Pantone, the global authority and trend watcher/maker on colour for the design industries, describes the 2010 Colour of the Year.

The invigorating green tones juxtaposed with the more soothing blues inspire positivity in most people and tend to appeal to both men and women. Given the combination of both cool and warm undertones of Turquoise, it proves a fabulous combination with any colour. Try it with 14-0848 Mimosa, a radiant, engaging yellow that was named 2009's Colour of the Year, for a space that feels like summer no matter what the temperature outside.

Pantone 15-5519 Turquoise is one of 3,000 hues available in eco-friendly Dutch paints.

Alternatively, try Nifty Turquoise, SW 6941 by Sherwin Williams (shown at right with Crown wallpaper 57217 Darcy and Kravet upholstery fabric 28460-1613). This combination also touches on a few other ongoing trends - a subtle metallic sheen to the wallpaper, neutral grey tones in the fabric, and simple, repetitive geometric patterns in varying scales.

Another paint option is Tropical Turquoise, 2052-30 by Benjamin Moore (shown left with Crown "Basso & Brooke" wallpaper and Kravet upholstery fabric 28449-315). This grouping is much more traditional, but as illustrated, can easily take on a modern feel with the right furniture and accents.

The Chair Statement

It can show creativity and uniqueness and allow for untold amounts of experimentation. To that end, here are some new designs that push the barriers of what a “chair” should be, introducing a sense of whimsy and playfulness.

Toronto’s Underpass Park

Dec 09, 2011 by MeCC Interiors

Urban renewal of derelict lands is extremely underrated and rarely pursued. The development of Underpass Park by Waterfront Toronto, in my mind, is an even greater endeavour because it reclaims lands that were formerly “lost.”

Toronto’s Green Roofs

Dec 09, 2011 by MeCC Interiors

Planting grasses, plants, or even trees on rooftops is a great aesthetic element. It helps to soften the skyline and bring more life and appeal to the city’s scope while also helping to improve air quality by capturing and recycling airborne carbon monoxide. The fact that green roofs also happen to insulate buildings, cooling them in summer and warming them in winter, while also reducing precipitation run-off is merely a bonus.

Perhaps more so in Canada than other areas of the world, we cherish the summer months and the opportunity to spend some quality time outdoors, even if we’re just lounging around home. Our outdoor rooms may not be as elaborate as what you’d find in more temperate areas, but we definitely move seasonal furnishings outdoors and into the fresh air.
