Choosing a String Trimmer
Is trimming grass and weeds getting the best of you? Do you feel like you’re living with a little lawn of horrors? Lowe’s offers a wide variety of string trimmers to help keep you in control. Here are a few things to consider when deciding which one is right for you.
Cutting Path
Like mowers, string trimmers are available in a variety of cutting widths, each suited to different use:
Curve or Straight Shaft
Curve shaft models are generally lightweight, well balanced and economically priced.
Straight shaft models are good for larger yards and for reaching under decks, shrubs, benches, etc. Straight shaft trimmers are also more comfortable for tall people to use.
Gas or Electric
Gas string trimmers are generally more powerful than electric trimmers and are usually a better choice for those with large trimming jobs. Two-cycle models require you to mix fuel and oil. Larger 4-cycle models are also available.
Electric string trimmers are lighter and easier to start than gas trimmers and require no fuel mixing, but they are less powerful. Also, those which require an extension cord are somewhat limited in portability.
Cordless electric trimmers are generally lightweight, rechargeable and fully mobile, making them an excellent choice for those trimming a large area with light weeds.
Brush Cutter
For trimming tall, heavy grass or light brush, you will need a trimmer with a brush cutter. A brush cutter is a small blade that attaches to the trimmer.
Split Shaft
The split shaft allows for a variety of multi-task attachments such as blowers, tree and hedge trimmers, tree pruners and cultivators.
