Simple Holiday Decor
by Deanna Newhouse, Newhouse Interiors
What is Christmas? It is a time to bring goodwill to others, cherish our loved ones and guide us to peace. The real spirit of Christmas can be captured not only in our hearts but also in our homes by “decking the halls”.
You too can decorate beautifully, with all the festive flair for the holidays, even with your busy schedule and a specific budget. Keep your holiday decor simple this season. Seasonal decorating should enhance and showcase your personal taste.
The Christmas tree is usually the footprint of our seasonal design. Try new bold colors, and mix it up with traditional and modern ornaments. Add some silk ribbon; weave the ribbon down the tree and tie bows on either end. Bring the out doors into your space. Add some pine greenery to your mantel, windows, door frames or shelves.
Laying fresh pine on the table, in an elegant glass bowl or silver tray. With festive silk ribbon and a candle nestled in the center.
Punch it up! An easy elegant holiday look, fill a crystal bowl or vase with piles of sparkling Christmas ornaments, pine cones or colorful holiday treats. Add some garland to your staircase as a focal point.
A wreath on the front door gives off a warm and welcoming presence.
Save all your boxes through out the year. Wrap each empty box with festive paper and ribbon. Place them by the front door or under a miniature tree for added color.

Wood Ceilings
Okay, so I'm moving into a fabulous new house in the hills that might as well be a cabin. Wood exterior, wood floors, and wood beam exposed ceilings. Which is all great, but would be better the place weren't nestled in the shadows of trees--meaning very little light comes in. The wood ceilings only enhance the cave-like atmosphere. I was ready to paint them white until my landlord refused to allow it. The walls are already white (which I find boring). What can I do to lighten up the ceiling and the space without doing any major renter-forbidden projects? Read the answer »
