Kitchen Magic was asked to create a functional kitchen for this wheelchair bound homeowner who lived alone and had struggled with inaccessible space for many years and was greatly limited when working in the kitchen.

When our draftsman worked with the homeowner to come up with solutions he asked about every aspect of her kitchen and cooking experience to make it more manageable. Just getting to the upper cabinets was a daunting task. “Making them three inches lower makes a world of difference”, she said.

The lower cabinets are now four inches lower as well. “It doesn’t sound like a lot however, it is all the difference to reaching items or not reaching them.”

To simplify things even more, Kitchen Magic outfitted the interior cabinets with pull down shelves. Now it’s a matter of pulling the items down to you instead of reaching up. The sink and cook top now have sufficient leg room so a wheel chair fits right underneath.

The homeowner had to cope with a serious health hazard every day; she had to pull food out of the oven and place it on top of a wood cutting board in her lap. This shocked our draftsman who found this completely unacceptable and wanted to make the kitchen safe. A strategically placed cutting board now slides back into the cabinet and you’d never know it was there, making the kitchen user friendly and preparing meals a pleasure instead of a nuisance.

When we asked if there were any more unusual constraints, she brought up the difficult obstacle of maneuvering in between the peninsula and the island. All 1970s kitchens had a peninsula however, this created a “trapped effect” and the homeowner either had to back out or go all the way around the island.

A more open floor plan was the obvious solution. We replaced the peninsula storage space by making all the other cabinets more accessible with roll out shelving, lazy susans and the pull down upper shelving.

Making life easier doesn’t have to break the bank. There are always cost effective solutions and options such as a roll-out spice rack. Its just a matter of some interior cabinet accessories, some beautiful yet less expensive materials and a little common sense.
