Our client bought this Victorian semi-detached row house in Downtown Toronto. The location was very important. The size of the home was quite small. An open concept design was perfect for this project.
Transforming this old rooming house was a challenge. With careful planning the house was turned into a stylish, sleek, urban home. Using creativity, the main floor was remodeled into an attractive open concept design making this space appear much larger than it is.
- At the front door a closet was built creating a foyer with a transom above, matching the front door entrance.
- Additional storage space was built above the closet with 2 double magnetic decorative doors.
- Black granite tiles were laid subway style giving it the classic look of a Victorian home.
- The 9 ½' high ceilings on the main floor was a bonus existing feature which allowed us to add decorative crown molding & trim without making the space look smaller.
- Pot lights were installed throughout the home.
- Existing space in the kitchen was transformed by using natural maple shaker cabinets with black granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances & black granite floor and the finishing touch was the addition of the French door which allows natural light.
- The wall separating the stairs leading up to the second floor was removed to create an open feeling and 3 diagonal openings were added on the structural wall to transfer light down to the main floor.
- On the 2nd floor an old railing was removed and rebuilt with a knee wall complete with decorative moldings to give a classic wainscoting look.
- One of the bedrooms was turned into a large spa like bathroom.
- The doorway to the master bedroom was moved forward to incorporate a large closet in the master bedroom. Finally a vaulted ceiling was added to the master bedroom to increase the volume of space.
