Kitchen Before

Kitchen After

The clients had a number of ideas for their new kitchen. Along with a peninsula to address the family room, an island, an eating area and a professional-grade cook top and hood, they provided specific interior cabinet requirements, including a pullout laptop work station. The design of the kitchen was a product of giving form to the client's needs while responding to the language of the addition's architecture. The gentle sweeping curve of the cabinetry that gives way to the family room addresses the rear entry and opens up the circulation, providing room for the eating area.

The curve is revisited in the raised glass bar top and again in the glass-tiled backsplash over the stove. The bulk of the cabinetry lightens as it nears the family room to provide an easy relationship between the two spaces.

Introducing a second sink beside the fridge creates a breakfast/snack area that is also great for entertaining. The kitchen features major elements like the range hood as focal points for both rooms, and uses a material palette that exudes modern warmth. The extensive cabinetry is a rich cherry wood with accents like frosted glass cabinet doors, light fixtures, granite counters, a hidden toy cabinet with touch latch and a bookshelf.

Developing the interior and the exterior design elements in tandem resulted in a space that is both efficient and beautiful. While only 8-by-15 feet, it has dramatically increased the feel of space and quality in the home. The placement of the stained wood windows and doors maximize light, while respecting privacy and environmental issues, addressing circulation routes and furniture layouts.
