April’s Renovation of the Month is a great example of improving your home for comfort and efficiency. In this month's renovation feature, we have focused on energy-efficiency and home comfort upgrades. Heating and cooling systems that are professionally installed will make a major difference in the comfort level that your family experiences while at home. A home that has not updated its heating and cooling systems can have poor air quality, affecting the air you breathe daily. Consider not just updating your heating and cooling systems, but cleaning your filters regularly.

We have selected one job that had a complete makeover in this respect. The homeowner will now enjoy the benefits of lower energy bills while living in a much more comfortable environment. This 39-year-old duplex needed major changes including replacement of old windows and doors with new, more energy-efficient windows and doors, additional attic insulation and ventilation throughout the house. Additionally, the home’s 60% efficient furnaces were replaced by 90% efficient models.

As the trucks arrive, the renovation is about to begin. Parts unloaded from the truck include 20 new energy-efficient windows, 10 doors, blown-in insulation for the attic, and two high-efficiency furnaces. A typical home renovation of this magnitude can take days or weeks of coordination. One of the most impressive aspects of this job was the timing – the full job was completed in only one day!

In this photo you see a typical single-pane aluminum frame window found in most pre-1990 constructed homes throughout Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Replacing old single-pane windows with new energy-efficient windows can reduce your home’s heating costs and improve comfort. Consequently, these types of home improvements will increase your home value and curb appeal.
