Barrier-Free Design
One of the homeowners has a debilitating medical condition that has recently bound him to a wheelchair. The old bathroom was out-of-date, poorly designed, and the homeowner found it hard to maneuver himself in it, so they sought the expertise of award-winning designer Anthony Binns. One of the homeowner’s main concerns was to have a bathroom that was accessible and designed for everyone to use.
In the past, designs for the physically challenged have been cumbersome, noticeable and poorly planned. But a truly accessible space should be equally accessible to everyone, not just someone with a disability. It should look and feel natural to all, it should not be noticeable, and should be designed for every person. If something is designed well, it is designed beautifully for each person, regardless of their physical capabilities.
