Restoring a Landmark

The Beacon Theatre in downtown Hopewell, Virginia is one of the cities most recognizable landmarks. It opened on Main Street in 1928 as a silent movie theatre. In the 1950s the Beacon Theatre was the hot spot on Friday and Saturday nights where residents could go on dates or family outings. For 53 years the theatre entertained folks in Hopewell, but sadly had its last curtain call in 1981.

A grassroots campaign began in 1987 to save the theatre and a group of citizens established the Hopewell Preservation Inc. to raise money to restore, revive and reopen the historic theatre. This local treasure is now in the midst of a face-lift and can thank some of their new good looks to the Bellawood Brazilian Cherry floors that were installed in the Flannagan Family Grand Ballroom and the Jones Family Conference Center.

“The floors are the signature of this theater remodel,” exclaimed Cheryl Maida, Executive Director Beacon Theatre/Hopewell Preservation Inc. “I wish I had a dollar for every time I say Bellawood Brazilian Cherry when I give tours.”

Because the floors are in the ballroom and conference rooms durability was essential when picking the type of wood they would use. Brazilian Cherry is great for high-traffic areas that call for a striking appearance, so it was a perfect choice for the Beacon Theatre. Adding to the floors durability is the Bellawood high abrasion aluminum oxide finish and 50-year warranty. This finish is the hardest surface available for hardwood floors. Plus, it is pre-finished so there was no messy sanding or smelly fumes during the installation process.

“The rich beauty of this product provides a level of elegance and sophistication that will take your breath away when you come into our facility,” Maida expressed. “Our clients and their guests notice our floors immediately and always comment on how beautiful they look.”
