Bathrooms are often disadvantaged spaces – the demand is high, the room is small, and storage is virtually non-existent. How do you get that spa-like feel while keeping everything you need easily accessible?
1. Drawers. Drawers. And more drawers. Love them or hate them, cabinets with drawers simply offer more storage. You can have an existing furniture piece converted into a vanity. Or you can purchase a pre-made unit with drawers that are already cut to accommodate for plumbing.
2. Customize your existing units. Add extra shelves behind the doors of the medicine cabinet and/or vanity. This not only helps to create more storage within the unit(s), but also creates more order.
3. Add drawer organizers to maximize storage and organization. This is especially helpful in make-up and/or shaving drawers.
4. Baskets and containers are the next best thing to drawers. Create your own “drawers” using existing cabinets with additional shelves. Rather than digging around for what you need, pull out the container when you need something it holds. Simply slide it back in when you’re done.
5. Use dead space to its fullest. Decorative boxes or containers can be stacked under pedestal and/or floating sinks, create both storage and visual interest.
6. Decorate the walls. If a space is free and not impeding a door or the flow of traffic, use it! Hotel-style towel racks provide ample room for both stacking and hanging towels in an attractive way. Most styles have matching glass shelves. Tuck “private” items into boxes or containers.
7. Mirror, mirror on the wall… Large framed mirrors create a fabulous look. But what about all that space behind them? Consider putting side hinges on the mirror and creating open shelving in behind.
8. Doors have two uses. The inside of vanity doors can be outfitted for custom storage. Customize solutions found in the kitchen section of organizational stores.
9. Floating consoles can be more than stunning showpieces. Look for models with a shelf that “floats” above the floor to stack towels and other essentials.
10. Towel bars aren’t just for towels. Placing smaller sized bars on the exposed side of a vanity or cabinet creates a great magazine rack.
11. Create niches in the shower or other cramped spaces. They provide optimal and easily accessible storage without stealing from the existing footprint of the room.
12. Storage cubes do double duty. They provide a quick seat, when needed. You can also stash laundry or bulky items like toilet paper inside.
13. Privacy walls make a great hiding spot. Make niches or shelves in the wall. To hide items, add sliding or regular frosted glass doors.
14. Hide the clutter. When you are not using items, stow them away, keeping countertops and other surfaces clean. This visually increases the feel of the room.
15. Watch your dates. Many bathroom products carry expiration dates. Take the time to go through makeup and medicines to get rid of unnecessary items and clutter.
16. If you don’t regularly use it, does it need to be there? Items that are never or rarely used need not stay simply to occupy space. Purge what you do not use.
