How to Prep Your Lawn for Cold Weather

Not much survives a Canadian winter, and especially not your green grass. Yet, it’s still important to prep your lawn for cold weather after a long, hot growing summer. Just look at pictures of Toronto real estate and the homes for sale online to see what a difference a well-kept lawn in the winter makes to a house’s curb appeal.  You’re going to feel better driving up to a home that looks neat and maintained, even in the winter. As a bonus, this tips will help you avoid damaging your lawn and make it easy to re-start in the spring.

Here are five main steps that experts at Home Depot recommend to prepare our lawn for winter:

Clean it Up

First, remove all debris from your lawn.  That means you should rake your leaves and remove any stray toys or objects.

Give it a Mow

Mow grass to about two to two-and-a-half inches, but don’t remove the clippings and don’t mow it right to the ground. This will help return nutrients to the soil.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize

You want to moisturize your lawn and create pathways so that bugs like worms can crawl through and add even more nutrients and microorganisms. If you don’t know how to aerate your lawn, or don’t have the tools, just add in a layer, about a quarter inch,  of enriched soil.

Now is the time to sprinkle seeds all over your lawn. Be generous. Make sure to pick a seed that works for your house and climate. For example, if your lawn doesn’t see much sun, choose a seed suited to this purpose.

Fertilizing now will help put to bed a healthy lawn, as it rests over the winter. Since you just seeded your lawn, you need to take extra care to make sure the seed is watered and fed, or else the seed won’t grow healthy and large next spring. That means  watering every day to avoid the soil drying out and feeding it right away with an appropriate turf builder.
